Locating soil analysis samples made easy by a web service16.04.2009 00:00
A Finnish company called Viljavuuspalvelu Oy has opened a web service called Tilauslaari. This service makes it easy for a farmer to order analysis for soil samples taken from agricultural fields.
A new feature was added to the service recently. Farmers are now able to point out locations from which soil samples are taken. The location is important to know in order to properly follow how soil fertility changes in time. Farmers are required to sample their fields every 5 years.
The map service uses vector data delivered by Finnish government to show the location and shape of farmers fields. Additionally, a raster map can be added as an overlay to make it easier to locate the sampling sites. All the map data is linked to geographical coordinates which makes it possible to store sampling locations to a database by mouse clicks without any GPS-equipment.
The web service is located at address www.tilauslaari.fi. Users who do not have id's for the Viljavuuspalvelu system can check out the system using a demo feature which can be accessed via a link on the front page of the service.
Tilauslaari was developed by Finnish Net Solutions Oy (FNS) which takes also care of the maintenance of the system. Tilauslaari is closely linked to Tuloslaari which is a service used to store analysis data and deliver results to the customers of Viljavuuspalvelu.
