Nanotechnology found to be a rapidly growing industry sector in Finland16.04.2009 00:00
Nanotechnology is now heavily used in most sectors of the Finnish industry. Spinverse Ltd (Innopoli 2 Technopolis Ventures) has undertaken its third study for Tekes and has that the overall amount of Nanotech businesses has increased significantly in a four year time frame starting 2004. There were 61 Nanotech companies in 2004, now the number has increased to 202 active companies in the field as of 2008. In the latest study, Spinverse has also found that the amount of Nanotech that have commercial products has increased in a direct corrolation with the increase of companies, 27 in 2004 to 62 at present.
The majority of these companies function within the chemical industry, information and communications technology or the health and well being fields. This has led to a massive revenue increase with figures exceeding the 300million euro barrier in 2008. It goes with out saying that the increase has created many new employment opportunites, 3000 in 2008 compared with just 300 in 2004. Spinverse also predicts that by the year 2013, the industry will generate revenue of up to 1.2 billion euros whilst employing aorund 11,000 - 12,000 people.
In order to continue as the success story that it is, there will need to be continued investment by both government and private parties. Total investments in Nanotechnology have increased by as much as 33% since 2006. Sustained growth also hinges on other factors such as recruitment of highly skilled and competent staff and intellectual property rights being managed and handled in the correct manner.
