EDUCATION AND ECONOMY IN BERLIN
More than 350,000 Berlin residents are high qualified. There are four universities (Humboldt University, Freie Universität; Technische Universität; University of Arts) and fourteen colleges attended by approximately 133,000 students, which makes the proportion of students in Berlin higher than the national average.
A broad scientific infrastructure combined with a strong scientific community in Berlin's universities provide favourable conditions for research and technology companies.
In recent years, Berlin's economic development has been vastly accelerated by a rapid increase in the formation of companies in the science and technology sector. In terms of innovation, Berlin has found its niche as host to the most productive scientific community in Germany.
Sectors vital to Berlin's economy include the service industry, which employs approximately 600,000 people, and the information technology, communication and multimedia sectors, where approximately 73,000 people work in 4,000 small and medium-sized corporations. www.berlin.de
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Berlin`s economy is predominately composed by small and medium-sized companies.The city supports a large number of programmes and initiatives that aim to assist the development and sustainability of SMEs.
Financial support is provided to science parks and business centres as venture capital is made available to encourage the foundation of innovative start-ups. Berlin state initiatives seek to establish links between those in trade and industry with the research and development areas in and around Berlin.
The region has nurtured a close working relationship between the universities, colleges, and the 250 non-university research institutions. By partnerships between these institutions and combining funding opportunities, scientific know-how, and good business practices, all aspects of the sector are able to be enhanced.

Adlershof - City of Science, Technology and Media
The Adlershof science and business complex is situated in the south-east of Berlin. It is a complex comprised of a 'ScienceCity', a 'MediaCity', an Industrial park and the Humboldt University.
It also has its own recreational park. Other facilities include conference centres, hotels and municipal services such as the innovation and communication centre and the Berlin busines incubator.
Within Adlershof there are about 410 high technology companies, 11 non-university research institutions plus 147 media-related companies employing a total number of 8,246 highly qualified personnel.
There are several high-technology centres within the park, providing facilities in the areas of information and media, photonics and optical sciences, materials and microsystems technologies and environmental, bio and energy technologies.
Adlershof also recognises the need to merge innovation with media and marketing expertise in order to maximise the potential of innovative start-ups.
In Adlershof, there is access to international marketing tools and established networks allowing innovative companies greater sophistication in the way in which they promote themselves.
The Humboldt University is an example of how relationships between academic institutions and private ventures can achieve synergy, reduce costs and facilitate the transfer of research results to industrial applications. The university, by relocating its major scientific faculties to the Adlershof campus, has been able to tap in to a concentrated network of on-site business and research resources. Also located in Adlershof, the university hosts many institutes: The departments of Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Psychology and Biology.
BERLIN BUCH AS MEDICAL SCIENCE PARK
To the city's north, the Berlin-Buch campus, plays host to a research centre for biological medicines and medical science. The renowned Buch campus has the highest concentration of clinics, biomedical institutions and new and innovative biotechnology companies in Germany.
