TUM - Tech GmbH, Munich
The Munich area is one of the most relevant high-tech areas in Europe with an agglomeration of some of the key players in the various high-tech areas and supporting servieces.
Some of the well-known players are:
Universities:
- It is home to two (out of three) German Elite-Universities TUM (Technical University Munich) and LMU (Ludwig-Maximilian-University) and in addition several other universities (University of the armed forces, University of Applied Sciences).
- In total there are almost 100.000 students in Munich. LMU is the biggest university in Munich with almost 50.000 students and 18 faculties. Besides law and humanities it has a very well known medical center as well as a life science center (biotech and gen-center).
- TUM is the second largest university with 20.000 students and 12 faculties. Its focus is in the areas of life sciences, technical areas, medicine and natural sciences. Amongst other fields, TUM is well-known for it's engineering faculty.
Companies:
- In Munich are the headquarters of well-known companies like Siemens and BMW (BMW also operates one of the most modern research and innovation centers of the automotive industries in Munich); Audi has its headquarter close to Munich. In addition, General Electrics (GE) has its European research center on one of the campus of the TUM in Munich.
Research Organisations:
- The well-known Max-Planck-Society (MPG) has its headquarter in Munich, as well as the Fraunhofer-Society (FhG). In addition, 25 institutes of MPG, FhG as well as other research organisations are based in the Munich area.
Patent Offices:
- Munich is the location of the German Patent office as well as the European Patent office.
