SCIENCE PARK
The three universities and the DIT constitute the high level entrepreneurship promotional effort in Dublin at an early stage, with Enterprise Ireland being the main support agency.
TECHNOLOGY PARK
There are over 20 venture capital firms (mainly smaller size) operating in Dublin. There are a number of commercial technology parks in the region, notably at CityWest.
RESEACH & DEVELOPMENT
Also major companies such as Wyeth, H-P, Intel, and Lucent-Alcatel have strong research programmes in cooperation with the universities and with the industrial development authority, IDA-Ireland. There are also in the region three other institutes of technology, a third medical school, (RCSI), and the nearby National University College at Maynooth, and the Dublin Institute of Advance Studies, all active in research.
BUSINESS INCUBATOR FACILITY
There are four business incubators for biotechnology and for ICT in addition to the Guinness Enterprise Centre (run by the BIC for the City). The support programmes for commercialisation of research , innovation vouchers for SMEs, support for patenting, and investment by the state through enterprise Ireland in venture funds partnering the private sector, are all part of a concerted programme of support for R&D in a strategy for S&T and Innovation in a national Plan towards 2013.
IMPORTANT EVENTS, FAIRS AND CONGRESSES
There are regular fairs, venture capital events, and network meetigns for medical device companies, buiotchnology companies and ICTcompanies through the national networks. The InterTrade Ireland, runs a large Business Plan Competition, Seedcorn, wich in 2007 has a prizefund of €280,000.
The first €5 million from patents taken out in Ireland and for inventive work that is carried out within any member state of the European Economic Area (EEA). rom 2008), are free of income tax on royalties. (Always check such matters with taxation specialists).
